Supporting Your Partner

Some children grow up with unsupportive parents. Everyone I know who grew up with unsupportive parents knows how much harder it is to live your life and express yourself freely when someone is regularly judging you, and maybe even invalidating you for your decisions.

Some people who had parents like that grew up and became successful in spite of their parents. Many don’t however. Kids need love and support to grow into healthy self-confident people.

But if you think the need for support ends when we’re grown, think again.

Have you ever been in a relationship with an unsupportive partner? I have, and it sucks. Our partners are usually the closest people to us (sometimes closer than our parents).

Let’s put it this way.

If two people are in a race with each of their spouses watching and one has a partner shouting “you can do it honey, you’ve got this, keep going, you’re winning!”

And the other has a spouse yelling “you suck, just quit, she’s faster than you, you’re not going to make it!”

Who do you think has a better chance of winning?
